Complete onboarding guide to setting up review collection and displaying reviews on your Shopify store

Written by Mollie Herbert

Here's everything you need to get REVIEWS.io fully working on your Shopify store — from connecting your account through to reviews actually appearing on your product pages. Six steps, roughly 20–30 minutes.

What "done" looks like: by the end of this guide, your store will be automatically inviting customers to leave reviews after they've received their order, and star ratings will be visible on your product pages.

Requirements

✅ An active REVIEWS.io account
✅ Admin access to your Shopify store

Step 1 — Complete your account details

Go to Account Details and fill in your business information correctly — this feeds into your public-facing profile and review syndication.

Full instructions: Edit profile information

Step 2 — Set your timezone

Go to Settings → Country Settings:

  1. Select the correct timezone for your business

  2. Click Save Timezone

This keeps invitation timing and reporting accurate to your local time — worth doing before invitations start going out at scale.

Step 3 — Connect Shopify to REVIEWS.io

  1. In your REVIEWS.io dashboard, go to Integrations → Shopify

  2. Enter your Shopify Store URL and click Install

  3. In the Shopify pop-up, click Install App

✔ How to check this worked: Integrations → Shopify should now show a Connected status, and your product catalogue should start populating (this can take up to a few minutes).

Product feed not syncing? See Shopify integration troubleshooting — only published Shopify products sync, and the feed refreshes every 24 hours (or trigger a manual sync any time).

Step 4 — Set up your review invitation email

Your invitation email is what actually asks customers for a review, so nothing gets collected until this is active.

Choose the template that matches your goal:

📧 Company Review Request — best for Google Ads / Google Seller Ratings
📧 Product Review Request — best for Google Shopping and on-site product stars
📧 Combined Review Request — both, in a single email
📧 Third Party Request — any third-party site you've also integrated

Full setup instructions: Create a simple email invitation

⚠️ Easy to miss: the template must be switched to Active, or it will never send.

How invitations are triggered: by default, your Shopify trigger is set to Fulfilled — an invitation queues as soon as Shopify marks an order fulfilled. This is the recommended setting for most stores. (There's also a Delivered option, but that only fires if your courier reports delivery status back to Shopify — if it doesn't, invitations will never queue. If in doubt, stay on Fulfilled.) You can change the trigger under Integrations → Shopify.

Step 5 — Design your collector page

When a customer clicks Write a Review in their invitation email, this is the landing page they land on.

Go to Collection → Collector Page to:

Step 6 — Install your review widgets on-site

This is the step that's easy to miss but essential — without it, you'll be collecting reviews that nobody visiting your store can see.

Please note: Widgets will only show once a review has been collected.

  1. From your REVIEWS.io dashboard, go to Integrations → Shopify → Automated Widget Install

  2. Add your email address so we can notify you once installation completes

  3. Customise the widget using Quick Settings/Quick Style, or the Advanced Editor for finer control — brand colour codes here if you want an exact brand match

  4. Select Preview Widget to check it before going live

  5. Select Start Installation — this queues automatically and the page updates live as it progresses

  6. Once complete, go to Shopify Admin → Online Store → Themes, find the theme marked [REVIEWS.IO], and select Actions → Publish

✔ How to check this worked: visit a product page on your live store — you should see the star widget displaying.

Using a Shopify 2.0 theme? Widgets can also be added as drag-and-drop App Embeds — see Installing Widgets - Shopify 2.0. Using TapCart or Boost Commerce? See the Shopify App article for those integrations specifically.

Switched or duplicated your theme since installing? Widgets don't carry over automatically — you'll need to re-add them to the new theme.

You're set up — what happens next

• Invitations queue as orders are fulfilled — there's naturally a lag between setup and your first review, since it depends on order and delivery timelines
• Reviews will appear on your collector page, and stars will show via your widgets on-site
• If you're also running Google Ads/Shopping, allow some time for Google to pick up the feed

Something not working?

Most early issues fall into a handful of known patterns — missing products, invitations not queuing, widgets not appearing after a theme change, or reviews not matching products after a SKU change. Check Shopify integration troubleshooting first; if it's not covered there, contact support via live chat.
