Complete onboarding guide to setting up review collection and displaying reviews on your BigCommerce store

Written by Mollie Herbert

Here's everything you need to get REVIEWS.io fully working on your BigCommerce store — from connecting your account through to reviews actually appearing on your product pages.

What "done" looks like: by the end of this guide, your store will be automatically inviting customers to leave reviews once an order ships, and star ratings will be visible on your product pages.

Heads up: unlike some of our other platform integrations, BigCommerce widget installation involves editing theme code directly (Step 4 below). If you're not comfortable editing theme files, you may want a developer's help for that step specifically — everything else in this guide is point-and-click.

Before you start

✅ An active REVIEWS.io account
✅ Admin access to your BigCommerce store
✅ For Step 4: access to edit your theme files (Storefront → My Themes → Advanced → Edit Theme Files)

Step 1 — Complete your account details

Go to Account Details and fill in your business information correctly — this feeds into your public-facing profile and review syndication.

Full instructions: Edit profile information

Step 2 — Set your timezone

Go to Settings → Country Settings:

  1. Select the correct timezone for your business

  2. Click Save Timezone

This keeps invitation timing and reporting accurate to your local time — worth doing before invitations start going out at scale.

Step 3 — Connect BigCommerce to REVIEWS.io

  1. In your REVIEWS.io dashboard, go to Integrations → BigCommerce and add your BigCommerce Permanent Address

  2. In your BigCommerce admin, go to Apps → Marketplace, search for REVIEWS.IO, and click Get this App

  3. Confirm the installation

✔ How to check this worked: your product catalogue syncs automatically as part of this connection — no separate product feed step needed, unlike some of our other integrations.

Step 4 — Turn off BigCommerce's built-in review system

If you skip this, you may end up with two conflicting review systems showing on your product pages.

  1. In BigCommerce admin, go to Advanced Settings → Comments

  2. Open the Built-in tab

  3. Deselect Product reviews

  4. Click Save

Step 5 — Set up your review invitation email

📧 Company Review Request — best for Google Ads / Google Seller Ratings
📧 Product Review Request — best for Google Shopping and on-site product stars
📧 Combined Review Request — both, in a single email
📧 Third Party Request — any third-party site you've also integrated

Full setup instructions: Create a simple email invitation

⚠️ Easy to miss: the template must be switched to Active, or it will never send.

How invitations are triggered: by default, your BigCommerce trigger is Shipped — an invitation queues once an order status changes to shipped.

Got existing customers you'd like to ask retroactively? Under the BigCommerce integration page, you can enable review requests for a selected date range of past orders — useful for a quicker initial batch of reviews.

Step 6 — Design your collector page

When a customer clicks Write a Review in their invitation email, this is the landing page they land on.

Go to Collection → Collector Page to:

Step 7 — Install your review widgets on-site

This is the step that's easy to miss but essential — without it, you'll be collecting reviews that nobody visiting your store can see. Unlike our automated Shopify install, BigCommerce widgets are added by editing your theme files directly.

Please note: Widgets will only show once a review has been collected.

In outline, you'll need to:

  1. In BigCommerce, go to Storefront → My Themes → Advanced → Edit Theme Files

  2. Add the REVIEWS.io base script (rating snippet JS/CSS) to your theme's base.html, using your Store ID in place of the placeholder

  3. Add the rating snippet element to your product template (usually product_view.html) and, if wanted, your category/listing template (usually card.html)

  4. Add the full Product Reviews Widget script — also in product_view.html — with your Store ID and styling configuration

The exact scripts, file paths, and full configuration options (styling variables, filtering, review display settings) are in the BigCommerce App article — copy the code blocks from there rather than retyping them.

✔ How to check this worked: visit a product page on your live store — you should see the star rating snippet and reviews widget displaying.

You're set up — what happens next

• Invitations queue as orders are marked shipped — there's naturally a lag before your first review
• Reviews will appear on your collector page, and on-page via the widgets installed in Step 4
• Want a fully custom sequence instead of the default? See our Flow feature (optional)
